【Clerk X Part 1】A story about how Touhou Kinjōkyō is great.【mostly proselytizing】
Nice to meet you, I'm store clerk X. It's already July in 2026, and time has moved fast. How have you been?
Leaving that introduction aside, you who are reading this article.
To be direct, have you played Touhou Kijokyo 〜 Fossilized Wonders.?
As of today, it's been almost a year since it was distributed at last summer's Comiket, but actually, I, store clerk X, bought Kijokyo only last month.
The reason is that I only started buying the original works last year, and because I was buying them in chronological order, it took me this long. It's not like I'm one of those forces that only acknowledge older works, seriously.
And so, I started playing Kijokyo...
Hmmmm...
Too interesting...
No, this work is just too interesting... the story, the gameplay, the music—everything hits me way too hard...
So, with lots of store clerk X's personal bias, I'd like to talk as much as I can about the parts I love!
①I love the story so much
It's been a year since release, so spoilers should be fine... right?

This incident had all sorts of things too, huh. You go to the sacred ground to investigate and end up fighting the head of the yamamba who can't go home, or you enter the sacred ground and get picked on and have to fight, or you find a pyramid and then end up fighting a ridiculous riddle maker...
The story event that left the biggest impression on me personally was,
1.YuiAri is precious
2.All 16 endings
3.Another moon again... Huh, Toyohime?????

Putting that joke aside,
1.YuiAri is precious
I really like YuiAri...
After being recruited by the Moon people because of her abilities but refusing them, she was sealed away: Ariya.
As a result of Ariya's refusal, Yuiman was brainwashed and imprisoned by the Moon people and overworked as a system to purify impurity, until the ever-growing amount of information from the outside world caused Yuiman to break down.
I really like that Ariya seems to have such intense feelings toward Yuiman, who was turned into a purification device because she refused the Moon people's recruitment.
Honestly, I hope those two keep deer hunting forever. 🏹🦌
2.All 16 endings
This work has a total of 16 endings: 8 main anomaly stones × Reimu/Marisa as the player characters. So much content!! I'm happy!!
What's more, since the anomaly stones are based on past incidents, lots of past characters show up in the endings too!! I'm so happy!!
Which ending is your favorite?
My favorite endings are Reimu's Creature Red and Marisa's Beast Hardness ending.
Isn't Keiki in the ending super cute? ZUN's art in the ending has a unique looseness to it, and I really liked the Keiki drawn that way. I can understand why that certain store clerk YM-san pushes her so hard.
I also really like Keinoko as a character, and I was especially thrilled because I never expected to see her interacting with Marisa again this soon in the original work. Ah, I love her.
3.Another moon again... Huh, Toyohime?????
This was the biggest surprise in this work. From "Another Moon incident on Stage 4!?" to Toyohime, you know. And she's a Stage 5 boss, which is quite an important position in Touhou.
My first impression was not "It's Toyohime! Yay!" but rather, "Eh, Toyohime!? Are you allowed to put her in!?" I was happy, of course, but to think one of the Watatsuki sisters, known as one of the most cheat-like characters among Touhou characters, would appear. Well, since an even morecheat-likecharacter showed up, I guess it was okay?
Even after defeating her, as expected of Toyohime, there was no shabby art. I wonder if book characters will appear in integer-numbered titles again in the future? Personally, I really want Mizuchi to show up!!!
②The gameplay is too interesting
I really like the game's unique systems, Anomaly Stones and Anomaly Enemies.
First, with the anomaly stone system, you can choose and equip one of 8 kinds of anomaly stones for the 4 types: Main, Spread, Focus, and Support.
The customization is way too high!
Just looking at the equipment screen can take up a good hour! What a fun game!
Also, the anomaly enemies have a downside in that once they accumulate anomaly value, they appear automatically and attack you, but when you defeat them, they come with the welcome effect of item drops and bullet clears. So grateful.
To be honest, I'm pretty bad at gimmicks like Subterranean Animism's Spirit World Trance and Ten Desires' Season Release that use extra buttons. I often end up hesitating over whether to use those or bombs, react too late, and lose my life with items in hand. I'm not good with this kind of thing...
So the Perfect Cherry Blossom's Border of Shinra, which activates on its own, was my personal favorite unique system, but Kinjoukyou's incident enemy system works the same way, so I really love it. I love incident enemies!
...Actually, I was thinking the same thing when it came to the Beast Metropolis otter spirit, but unique systems that can erase bullets are really strong, aren't they...!?
③The music is just too god-tier
By the way, please don't mind this title with barely any vocabulary left. I'm the type of otaku who loses all vocabulary when overflowing with love.
Touhou original music really is amazing. It’s always full of great tracks, but this time it especially overflowed with songs that really struck my soul.
"The Last One Is Used to It 〜 Stone Goddess" is a wonderful song that, unlike the bosses in previous integer-numbered games, captures Ariya’s loneliness and passion as she creates an incident all by herself just to save one friend. There are a lot of boss themes that leave a strong impression, but this one stood out especially.
"Prester John’s Golden Domain" is another song I absolutely love. In fact, if we're talking about stage 3 road themes, it might even be my favorite of all time. From the intro, the heroic phrases shake my brain, and the guitar leading into the chorus is right up my alley.
"Four-Color Labirinth" is a track I really want you to listen to with earbuds or headphones. When I first heard it while playing without earbuds, I only thought, "Hmm, pretty good song." But when I put on earbuds and listened in full music-focus mode, it was seriously intense. How do I put it... it's just... intense!! The drums are especially amazing!! Everyone, please listen to Four-Color Labyrinth~!!!
There are also tons of amazing tracks packed into Kinjoukyou. Like "Sacred Forest", or "If You're Going to Do It, Gamble Your Life to Solve the Mystery", or "Hallucination on the Top of the Two-Joined Shells".
But if I kept talking, I'd never finish, so I somehow squeezed out my personal top 3. That was hard...
Summary
That said, even after talking this much about Touhou Kinjoukyou, there are still so many things I love and want to spread the word about.
For example, there are the charming new characters I couldn't fully cover, such as Naruko and Nina, and the spell cards like "Shiochiku" and "Stone Goddess"... Touhou Kinjoukyou is packed with so many charms that I could never talk about them all.
That god-tier game, "Touhou Kinjoukyou 〜 Fossilized Wonders.", is on sale at AKIBA-HOBBY!!
Steam is easy to buy, but that urge to collect the actual CDs is just the nature of an otaku, isn't it.
